Wisdom in Management
A workshop with Dr. Pille Bunnell on 13th December 02 in Milton
Keynes
presented by Systems Practice for Managing Complexity (SPMC)
... Although we earnestly search for better knowledge and understanding,
as well as more suitable procedures, when faced with managing complex
systems we seldom speak of wisdom when we talk about management. At
the same time, one of the more difficult tasks faced by educators
and managers is to shift attention and understanding from local linear
processes to systemic dynamics. Yet the intersection of local linear
rationality with systemic thinking entailed in wisdom is relevant,
and possibly required, for understanding and managing complex systems.
This workshop will provide the conceptual basis for seeing how what has traditionally been called "wisdom" takes place as a systemic dynamic process which is fundamentally present in all humans, and can be cultivated. The questions of what constitutes living, what is cognition, how it has expanded along lineages of living systems, and how humans became intelligent languaging beings, all will ground an explanation of what constitutes knowledge, understanding and wisdom. Considering the above, it becomes possible to see under what circumstances wisdom flourishes, and hence begin to consider what is important to conserve in all management concerns, whether these have to do with people, institutions, or ecosystems.
Over the course of this workshop you will encounter evocative invitations to reconsider common premises about cognition and reality. You will be presented with non-technical explanations that expand your understanding of living systems, learning, complexity and management. Part of the time will be spent in a plenary group in which Pille will give an illustrated presentation, and part of the time in smaller groups engaged in exercises. Questions and conversations will be made welcome.

of human evolution,
and with us, the nature of this earth."
Dr. Pille Bunnell is a systems ecologist and knowledge architect with over twenty years experience in environmental education and consulting. Pille is now engaged in the development and application of the Biology of Cognition in education, business, ecology and daily life, particularly as it concerns the systemic sustainability of humans and the biosphere. She has just completed a three year term as the President of the American Society of Cybernetics.
